About This Call
New Mexico Arts invites artists to apply for two six-week residencies at the Bosque Redondo Memorial Historic Site. Each residency includes comfortable private lodging in a one-bedroom casita with a fully equipped kitchen, laundry facility, modern bathroom, and furnished living space. Artists receive an all-inclusive stipend of $14,000 to cover all living expenses and project-related materials.
Artists are invited to create a presentable deliverable with a public component, including but not limited to exhibitions, workshops, or performances for the community at the completion of the residency. A strong community engagement component that provides genuine enrichment must be considered in collaboration with the site. Site-specific works are strongly encouraged. Artwork should appeal to residents and visitors to the area and must be safe for both children and adults, ADA compliant, and not leave a permanent mark on the environment when removed. Artists will have access to the historic site and all archival materials during regular operating hours, as well as a Resource Room that can be used as studio, exhibition, performance, workshop and gathering space. Internet access is provided in or near the Memorial.
The Bosque Redondo Memorial preserves the history of the site with specific focus on the Native American experience, including the Long Walk and internment of Navajo and Mescalero Apache peoples from 1863 to 1868. Artists are encouraged to consider the cultural and local histories of the historic site and surrounding area in their work. Individual artists may apply, and the local selection committee will select the proposal that best responds to the history and culture of the site. Artists will be paid in two phases: 50% upon contract approval and 50% upon completion of contract activities. Artists must provide their own transportation, cover their own food and beverage costs, and provide personal medical or workers' compensation insurance. Two residency periods are available: March 26 – May 6, 2023 and May 13 – June 17, 2023.
