About This Call

This exhibition challenges photographers to explore the simplicity of light and shadow in black and white photography. The show is open to any photographic style, process, and media including traditional, digital, hybrid, cyanotypes, chemigrams, photograms, and experimental processes, with the only creative requirement being that submitted images be in black and white.

Open to all US National and Hawaii State residents. Artists may submit a maximum of five entries at $15 per entry. All images must be submitted digitally (1-5 images per entry, maximum 5 MB file size, Adobe RGB 1998 or sRGB color space). Images should not be watermarked or contain visible signatures to maintain anonymous jurying. The submission window closes Friday, February 3 at 5:59 PM HST. Artists will be notified on February 6, 2023.

The exhibition opens Friday, March 3, 2023 with an opening reception from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM and closes Thursday, March 30. Artwork must be dropped off at Wailoa Center on Saturday, February 25 between 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM, or at Akamai Arts in Kona on Friday, February 24 at 10:00 AM. Off-island artists are responsible for shipping costs and must include a prepaid return label and $10 handling fee. A printing option is available for off-island artists to submit files to local Hilo printers. All off-island work must be received by Friday, February 24. Artists must pick up work on Friday, March 31 between 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM at Wailoa Center or Akamai Arts in Kona at 10:00 AM. Monetary prizes will be awarded. All works must be for sale with a 20% commission charged by HIAA on sales. Jurors are Steven Garon and Wayne Levin.
