About This Call
Arts Cheyenne is seeking unique kinetic art pieces where movement, color, sound, and other sensory experiences are central, with consideration given to the environment where the piece will be displayed. There will be no electrical power available at any placement sites, so natural elements must be relied upon for movement. Each piece must be self-contained, stable, and durable for its environment and safe for nearby living things. The sculptures will be installed outdoors in various parks around the Cheyenne community from September 2023 until September 2024. Selected artists will be awarded an honorarium of $1,000.
Each artwork must be original work securely attached to its base/foundation and may be painted, sculpted, welded, or created using other techniques. Artwork should account for Wyoming's extreme conditions, including winds exceeding 40-50 mph, rain, snow, and high/low temperatures. The maximum height for each artwork is 20 feet, with a recommended 10-foot clearance above ground level for walking under or around the work. All proposals will be reviewed for safety, stability, and wind load, with recommendations made as needed. Artists must be available to assist with installation and have their sculptures ready by August 2023.
Applicants must submit 5-8 previous work examples (preferably relevant to outdoor public art), an artist statement, a written description of the piece, a materials list, estimated timeline for completion, site installation recommendations/needs, and visual renderings. Artists must be United States residents and own all rights to the sculpture. Submissions require a minimum of 3 images and a maximum of 6 images, with up to 6 videos allowed, for a total of 3-8 work samples.
