About This Call
The 2023 Hawaii Nei Art Exhibition is open to residents of the Island of Hawai'i. All works must be original, created in the last two years, and not previously shown in any other exhibition, gallery, or website. Artwork in any medium or combination of media is welcome.
The main subject of submitted artwork must be a species native to Hawai'i Island, defined as an organism that naturally arrived to Hawaiʻi without human help via wind, waves, or wings. Both endemic species (found only in Hawaiʻi) and indigenous species (native to Hawaiʻi and elsewhere) are acceptable. Artwork highlighting non-native species, including Polynesian introductions, or native species exclusively endemic to other Hawaiian islands will not be accepted. Artwork made of materials from endangered native species will not be accepted.
Submission deadline is Friday, October 6 at 5:59 PM (HST). Artists will be notified by October 9 if their work has been selected. Accepted artwork drop-off occurs October 27-28 at designated locations. The exhibition opens Friday, November 3 with an opening reception from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM, and closes Thursday, December 14. Artists must pick up work by Friday, December 15. Entry fee is $15 per submission, with a maximum of five entries per artist. All selected adult entries are required to be for sale with a minimum price of $20; 60% of sales goes to the artist and 40% to the Hawai'i Island Art Alliance and Three Mountain Alliance Foundation. Monetary prizes will be awarded for 1st Place, 2nd Place, and Jurors' Choice. Final jurying and award selection occurs November 1.
