About This Call
For more than 50 years, the Museum of Science and Industry (MSI) has hosted the nation's premier exhibition of African American art. This annual show presents more than 100 works of art from professional and emerging Black artists from across the United States. Applications are being accepted for the 2023 Black Creativity Juried Art Exhibition. Contemporary works created in any visual medium are accepted.
Eligibility: General Category—Black artists over 18 years of age. Teen Category—Black artists who are 18 years of age or younger OR currently enrolled in grades 9-12 (or the equivalent). Each artist may submit up to four individual artworks. Work must have been completed in the past three years (2020-present). Artwork must be original, unsold, and not have been selected for any previous Black Creativity Juried Art Exhibition. Awards: General Category—Best in Show $3,000, Second Place $2,000, Third Place $1,000. Teen Category—Best in Show $500, Second Place $300, Third Place $200.
Application Requirements: Submissions are accepted via CaFE only and will be judged anonymously. Work sample requirements: up to 4 images, 4 audio files, and/or 4 video files (minimum 1 total sample required). Media specifications—Images: JPEG/JPG, 1200 pixels minimum on longest side, max 5MB. Audio: AIFF, WAV, XMF, MP3 up to 10MB (96-320 kbps) or SoundCloud/Spotify/iTunes URL. Video: MOV, MP4, WMV, 3GP, AVI, ASF, MPG, M2T, MKV, M2TS up to 100MB (640x480 to 1920x1080 resolution, 12-30 fps) or YouTube/Vimeo URL (must be public). Dimension limits: 2D hard-sided works max 96" in any direction; 2D soft works max 104" in any direction; all artwork max 70 lbs. 3D works reviewed individually based on gallery and installation capabilities. Video works presented on monitors only. Accepted artists will be notified via email in late October/early November. Exhibition runs January 16–April 23, 2023. All accepted works must be framed or finished and ready for immediate installation. Accepted artists are responsible for delivery and pickup. No commission taken from sales.
