2023 Art Around Town, Carbondale, CO

This public art opportunity invites sculpture artists to have their work installed in Carbondale for one year. All sculptures will be placed on random sized blocks of Colorado Yule Marble with custom steel plates adhered to the top. Sculptures must arrive for installation with a steel plate attached to the bottom. A Public Works installation crew will assist with welding, lifting, equipment, labor, and placement. The artist must be present for both installation and deinstallation.

Sculptures will be located in high pedestrian and biking areas. Artists must consider durability of materials and weather-proofing for Carbondale's climate, which fluctuates from intense cold and snow to heat. Materials should be highly durable and low maintenance. Sculptures cannot exceed the Town's outdoor lighting code restrictions and will not be allowed to be illuminated. Height, shape, and any sharp protruding objects must be carefully considered for public safety.

Selected artists will receive a $1,000 honorarium at installation in May. Installation dates are May 15–May 31, 2023, with an Artists Reception & Art Walk on June 1, 2023. Removal dates are May 1–May 15, 2024. Applicants must submit up to 10 digital images showing all angles of the sculpture and the base with steel plate, detailed installation specifications (height, width, weight, base dimensions, points of contact, and sketch), and a one-page resume.
