About This Call
In its seventh year, the City of Westminster's Sculpture on Loan Program provides an opportunity for artists to display their sculpture in the Vicky Bunsen Sculpture Garden Park, an outdoor art venue in Historic Westminster. Up to eleven sculptures will be selected for display during the 2023-2024 program period, which runs from late July/early August 2023 through late July/early August 2024. The City has made significant investments in the area, including recent park improvements and designation as a Historic Art District. The area is marketed through numerous events including a Summer Block Party, Neighbor Nights, World Music Showcase, Shakespeare in the Park, three local community artisan festivals, summer history tours, and monthly art walks.
Sculptures must be garden size or larger with a minimum of 3 feet in one dimension and designed for long-term outdoor durability. Acceptable materials include metal, stone, or similarly durable materials; wood and powder coated surfaces will not be accepted. Sculptures taller than 11 feet require a certified engineer stamp of approval. Artwork must be able to be welded or bolted to a metal display base, bolted to a concrete pad, or bolted to a sidewalk. All artwork must be available for purchase, with the City collecting a 10% commission on sales. Selected artists will receive a $750 stipend after acceptance and installation. If artwork is removed through sale or other reasons, a sculpture of equal or greater value must be installed within 7 days.
Applications must be submitted online through CaFE and include 3-6 images of a single artwork, showing minimum front and back viewpoints. Required information includes artist details, artwork description (including dimensions, weight, and medium), current condition, artwork value (maximum $75,000), appraisal certificate, proof of authenticity, inspiration description, creation date, edition information, construction techniques, base/attachment method, and copyright ownership details. Applications will be reviewed by Cultural Affairs staff and other City staff based on materials, presentation, aesthetic quality, craftsmanship, appropriateness, maintenance requirements, and financial considerations. Community input will be provided at the Summer Block Party and through online engagement. Notification of selection is June 12, with installation deadline of August 15. The opening reception is September 23 at the World Music Showcase. Open to all artists; artist teams are eligible. Work must be original art.
