About This Call
The Artist-in-Residence Program at Glacier National Park offers artists the opportunity to pursue their artistic discipline while being surrounded by the park's inspiring landscape. The program seeks artists whose work is related to the park's interpretative themes, supports the mission of the National Park Service, and contributes to conservation of these public lands.
The program provides four weeks of uninterrupted time to pursue artistic work. Selected artists will be housed rent-free in a furnished cabin on the shores of Lake McDonald on the west side of the park. The cabin is rustic with no cell phone service or internet, though WiFi is available at several locations both inside and outside the park. Basic cooking equipment and bedding are provided. Artists must provide their own transportation and all necessary art supplies. Housing is available only for the artist; family members, significant others, and friends are not permitted to stay in the house.
During their residency, artists must present several public programs related to their experience as artist-in-residence. Programs can take the form of demonstrations, talks, exploratory walks, or performances, offered on both sides of the park and possibly in the local community. Programs can be for any audiences, including youth, park staff, visitors, and locals. Upon returning home, artists are encouraged to present one public program to their local community. Within six months of completing the residency, artists must provide digital images of selected work representing their experience as artist-in-residence. The park has the right to use these images in park publications, websites, and presentations for education and outreach. As part of the 2022/23 programs, successful candidates are invited to visit Waterton Lakes National Park in Canada for a day tour and workshop/presentation. A valid passport is required for this visit.
Residency sessions are offered in June and July of 2022 and 2023. The entry fee is $20.00. Up to three artists may apply as collaborators if their proposed project involves multiple artistic disciplines; collaborating artists will be housed together. Artists should be self-sufficient and able to live and work in close proximity to collaborators if applicable.
