2022 Stuart Artist-in-Residence at South Dakota State University

The Stuart Artist-in-Residence program at South Dakota State University's School of Design invites visual artists working in any discipline, including interdisciplinary approaches, to apply for a 4-week residency from September 6–30, 2022. The selected artist will receive a $2,500 honorarium and $200 materials stipend.

During the residency, the artist will have 24/7 access to the Ritz Gallery, a 1,200 sq. ft. lockable studio space, and a furnished apartment within walking distance. A bike will be provided for use during the stay. The resident artist is expected to maintain a full-time working schedule with an open-door policy, holding a minimum of 8 open studio hours per week to share their project development with students, faculty, and the regional arts community. The artist will be required to give a public lecture and participate in an open studio event and/or exhibition at the conclusion of the residency. The artist may be asked to visit School of Design class critiques, engage with the South Dakota Art Museum, or participate in local interviews. Use of university equipment and space within teaching studios is limited; applicants should specify studio furniture and equipment needs in their project intent statement.

Applications should include a one-page residency project intent statement outlining a 4-week plan to develop artwork independently, a resume (not exceeding three pages), three professional references, and 10 images of completed artwork or images relevant to the project intent. For audio and video work, provide web-link information within the resume. The entry fee is $18.00. Applications close April 4, 2022 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. The residency selection committee especially encourages applications from artists currently residing and working outside the South Dakota region. Artist is responsible for transportation, shipping, materials, supplies, meals, and personal expenses.
