About This Call
The 2022 Floyd Plein Air Biennial invites artists to paint plein air at locations including the Blue Ridge Parkway, Buffalo Mountain, sites along the Little River, local farms and vistas, and the Town of Floyd. Approximately 30 juried artists will be selected. The festival features artist demonstrations, collector educational talks, a Juried Artist Collector Preview Exhibition, Artist/Patron Welcome Reception with Wet Paint Sale, Artist/Patron Cocktail Party, Quick Draw Contest at the Historic Floyd Country Store & Friday Night Jamboree, Gala Reception, and Art Sale. The top cash prize is $1,000, with additional cash prizes for "Best of" themes and manufacturer awards and gifts. Nationally renowned plein air artist Kyle Buckland will serve as festival judge, and plein air painter and Virginia native Joli Ayn Wood will return as Chairperson.
Artists may submit up to five 2D works in any media including watercolor, acrylics, oil, gouache, or mixed media. The entry fee is $60 for non-members and $50 for Floyd Center for the Arts members. All accepted applicants must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19. The Center will make every effort to offer free host housing to participating artists on a first-come basis, with housing availability subject to change due to pandemic circumstances. Housing requests will be approved or denied no later than 60 days prior to the event start date.
Eligibility is open to all artists 18 years of age or older. Applications are accepted beginning January 3, 2022, with a deadline of February 14, 2022 at 11:59 p.m. MST. For questions, contact the Floyd Center for the Arts at 1-540-745-2784 or [email protected].
