About This Call
This public art opportunity invites sculpture artists to have their work displayed in Carbondale for one year, from June 2022 through May 2023. All sculptures will be placed on random sized blocks of Colorado Yule Marble with custom steel plates adhered to the top. Sculptures must arrive for installation with a steel plate attached to the bottom. A Public Works installation crew will assist with welding, lifting, equipment, labor, and placement. The artist must be present for both installation (May 16 – June 1, 2022) and deinstallation (May 1 – May 15, 2023). Selected artists will receive a $1,000 honorarium at installation.
Artists must consider durability and weather-proofing, as Carbondale experiences intense cold, snow, and heat. Materials should be highly durable and low maintenance. Sculptures will be located in high pedestrian and biking areas, so consideration must be made for height, shape, and sharp objects protruding. The Town of Carbondale has a strict outdoor lighting code, so sculptures will not be allowed to be illuminated.
Applications must be submitted online via CAFÉ by February 7, 2022 at 11:59 p.m. MST. There is no application fee. Applicants may submit up to 3 applications and must provide 5-8 digital images showing all angles of the sculpture and base with steel plate, detailed installation information (height, width, weight, base dimensions, points of contact, and sketch), and a one-page resume. Selected artists will be notified February 28, 2022. The Public Art Commission and invited jurists will serve as the selection committee. Contact Laurie Lindberg at [email protected] or 970/510-1325 with questions.
