About This Call
In its sixth year, the City of Westminster's Sculpture on Loan Program provides an opportunity for artists to display their artwork in the Vicky Bunsen Sculpture Garden Park, an outdoor art venue in Historic Westminster. Up to eight sculptures will be selected for display during the 2022-2023 program period, which runs from June 2022 through July 15, 2023. The City has made significant investments in the area, including the adoption of the Harris Park Neighborhood Plan and designation as a Historic Art District. The area is marketed through events including a Summer Block Party, Movie in the Park, the Around the World Cultural Festival, summer history tours, and monthly art walks.
Sculptures must be garden size or larger with a minimum of 3 feet in one dimension, designed and fabricated for long-term outdoor durability. Acceptable materials include metal, stone, or similarly durable materials; wood and powder coated surfaces will not be accepted. Sculptures taller than 11 feet require a certified engineer stamp of approval. Artwork must be able to be welded or bolted to a metal display base, bolted to a concrete pad, or bolted to a sidewalk. All artworks must be available for purchase, with the City collecting a 10% commission on sales. Selected artists will receive a $750 stipend after acceptance and installation. If artwork is removed through sale or other reasons, a sculpture of equal or greater value must be installed within 7 days.
Applications are reviewed by the City of Westminster's Office of Cultural Affairs staff based on materials, presentation, aesthetic quality, craftsmanship, compatibility with the City's existing public art collection, appropriateness, maintenance requirements, and financial considerations. Community input is provided at the Summer Block Party and through online engagement. Entry fee is $35 for the first application and $10 for each additional application (up to six total per artist). Each application should contain images of a single artwork with a minimum of 3 and maximum of 6 images, showing front and back viewpoints. The opening reception is the Around the World Cultural Festival on August 13, 2022.
