2021 - Icons

Las Laguna Art Gallery invites artists to explore the theme of cultural and pop icons. A cultural icon is an object made by a human being that is identified by members of a culture as representative of that culture, or a physical thing such as the national tree, flower, or pastime. Examples include the Statue of Liberty and eagle for America, red telephone booths and double-decker buses for England, the Eiffel Tower for France, and the Maneki-neko (beckoning cat) and cherry blossom tree for Japan. Each country and major cities across the globe can be identified by their icons—such as New York and the Big Apple, or San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge.

Pop icons can be movie stars, recording stars, athletes, or people throughout history who did something notable and are remembered long after their passing. Examples include Elvis Presley, Gandhi, Frida Kahlo, Mozart, Einstein, Michael Jackson, Walt Disney, David Bowie, Prince, John Wayne, Bruce Lee, Elton John, Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, and Bruce Springsteen. Sometimes pop icons can be identified by a single symbol, such as Prince's identifiable mark, Elton John's iconic glasses, or the Rolling Stones' graphic lips.

Acceptable mediums include: Acrylic, Airbrush, Charcoal, Collage, Color Pencil, Computer Art, Digital Art, Digital Photography, Drawings, Encaustic, Fiber Arts, Glass Art, Graphite, Illustration, Mixed Media, New Media, Oil, Pastel, Pen and Ink, Photo Assemblage, Printmaking, Sculpture, Traditional Photography, Video, and Watercolor. Entry fee is $35.00 for the first submission and $2.00 for each additional submission. Artists may submit up to 20 total work samples (images and/or videos). Artist notification is August 16, 2021. Exhibition dates are September 2-30, 2021, with an artist reception on Thursday, September 2 from 6:30pm to 9:30pm. All submitted artists will be accepted and have at least one work posted and promoted on the gallery's website. A select number of artists will be chosen to send their work to the gallery's brick and mortar location in Laguna Beach, California for the in-person exhibition. Commission split is 65% artist, 35% gallery.
