About This Call

The 2021 Hawaiʻi Nei Art Exhibition is open to residents of the Island of Hawaiʻi. All works must be original (no prints or giclèe), created in the last two years, and not previously shown in any other exhibition, gallery, or website. Artwork in any medium or combination of media is welcome.

The main subject of submitted work must be a species native to Hawaiʻi Island (either endemic or indigenous, arrived naturally without human help). All native species found from ridge to reef on Hawaiʻi Island are acceptable. Artwork highlighting non-native species, including Polynesian introductions, or native species found exclusively on other islands will not be accepted. Artwork made from endangered native species will not be accepted. Artists using native species as a medium are encouraged to consider the sustainability of gathering and to request permission from land owners.

Submission deadline is October 15, 2021 at 6:00 PM (HST). Artists may submit up to five entries at $15 per entry. Artist notification occurs October 18. Artwork drop-off is scheduled for October 29 at Donkey Mill Art Center (10:00 AM) and October 30 at Wailoa Center (10:00 AM - 2:00 PM). The exhibition opens November 5 with an open house from 1:00 PM - 6:00 PM and closes December 16. Artists must pick up work December 17 at Wailoa Center (10:00 AM - 2:00 PM) or Donkey Mill Art Center (10:00 AM). Monetary prizes will be awarded. All selected adult entries are required to be for sale with a minimum price of $20; youth entries are not required to be for sale. If artwork sells, 60% goes to the artist and 40% goes to the Hawaiʻi Island Art Alliance and Three Mountain Alliance Foundation to support fine arts and native species protection. Artists may donate their portion as a tax-deductible gift.
