About This Call

The City of Santa Clarita is seeking an artwork for its Public Art program. Artist(s) are invited to submit portfolios of past work for consideration. Up to five (5) artists will be invited to submit site-specific proposals for a functional Bike Rack artwork to be permanently located on a concrete pad. The City intends to select one artist to design and fabricate the artwork. The all-inclusive budget for this project is $8,000 in total.

The identified location is in front of the Old Town Newhall Library at the intersection of Lyons Avenue and Main Street, 24500 Main Street, Santa Clarita, CA 91321. Designs are encouraged but not limited to incorporate thematic reflections of the Old Town Newhall area: heritage, literacy, arts, and entertainment. The artwork must be an original design suitable for viewing by all ages and may not be used for advertisement or to promote business, product, or viewpoint. Designs must not include any breach of intellectual property, trademarks, brands, business names, corporate or organizational branding, or images of drugs. The artwork can be of any medium but must withstand desert climate conditions (high winds, extreme temperatures), uncovered weather, and be resistant to theft and vandalism. Artists must describe their experience with proposed materials and provide a maintenance schedule.

The functional Bike Rack must fit in a pre-determined space with dimensions provided to semi-finalists. It should be a functional sculpture with two points of contact for bikes to be secured and accommodate a minimum of eight bikes. The design must incorporate at least 60 percent recycled materials. The artwork must be installed with sufficient anchoring to prevent removal, breakage, or overturning due to wind or earthquake. A plaque will indicate the artist name, artwork title, materials, and year installed. Power is not available onsite; if required, a solar component is suggested. The artwork must comply with standard engineering practices, ADA standards, and not present a public safety hazard.

Up to five (5) semi-finalists will receive a $1,000 honorarium plus $400 accommodation allowance for the proposal. Semi-finalists must present a PowerPoint/PDF proposal addressing design guidelines, maintenance and conservation, and project budget in a 30-minute presentation with Q&A. The selected artist is responsible for all design, fabrication, transportation, delivery, installation, travel, and hotel costs. The artist must provide installation instructions and a maintenance guide and include insurance coverage for the installation period only. Eligibility: Artists 18 years of age or older, individual or collaborative applications accepted, must be located in the U.S. Application deadline: November 30, 2020 at 11:59 p.m. PST. Submit through CaFE: cover letter, resume or CV, up to ten (10) images of previous work (at least one public art example), artist statement, and 5-10 portfolio images with descriptions including materials, dimensions, location, dates, and maintenance information.
