About This Call
The City of Palm Desert invites artists, galleries, museums/non-profit arts organizations, and private collectors to submit proposals for the 2021-2022 El Paseo Sculpture Exhibition. A $5,000 honorarium will be provided for each selected artwork. Artists who participated in the 2019/2020 El Paseo Sculpture Exhibition are not eligible to apply.
Submissions must include a current resume or CV with contact information, up to five images of proposed sculpture in jpeg format, a description of the piece including materials and dimensions, and three references. Artists may submit a maximum of two sculptures for consideration. Sculptures must fit on existing concrete pads and meet specific requirements: 8' to 10' in height (5' maximum for the 48" x 48" pad, up to 13' for select pads), no more than 3,000 pounds, suitable for viewing from all angles, and constructed of durable materials to withstand desert weather conditions. All sculptures must be designed with tabs or other devices to secure them to the concrete pads without altering the pads. Power is not available on site; sculptures requiring power should include a solar component. Sculptures must comply with all appropriate engineering requirements.
The Art in Public Places Commission will select 18 sculptures plus up to 4 alternates by March 11, 2020, with City Council review and approval on April 9, 2020. Selected artists will be notified by April 13-17, 2020. Exhibition installation is tentatively scheduled for October 19 – November 5, 2020, with dedication in January 2021 and de-installation in October 2022. Artwork may be sold during the exhibition but must remain onsite throughout its duration. The City will provide installation, de-installation, advertising, pads, lighting, maintenance, and onsite insurance. Participants are responsible for delivery and pick-up of artwork per scheduled dates. Contact Amy Lawrence at 760-837-1664 or [email protected] for questions or alternate application methods.
