About This Call

The City of Albuquerque Public Art Urban Enhancement Division seeks works of art made by artists residing in New Mexico that exhibit compelling craftsmanship and technique in historically rich media including tinwork, straw appliqué, bulto sculpture, retablo painting, colcha embroidery, weaved textiles, pottery, and altar screen design. $50,000 is available to purchase artworks for the City of Albuquerque Public Art Collection, with the Arts Board hoping to purchase artworks priced within an average range of $500 to $10,000.

This competition is limited to artists who have juried into the 2020 Traditional Spanish Market and are legal residents of New Mexico. Proof of New Mexico Tax Identification may be required. Traditional completed 2-D works must be a minimum of 12" to a side and a maximum of 55" to a side. 3-D works should not exceed 40" in any one dimension. If there is a two-dimensional relief component, it must not extend more than 4 inches from the surface. The artwork must be appropriate for public display at any City facility. Works including subject matter such as apparent representation of violence, inappropriate nudity, denigration of individuals or cultures, or desecration of significant cultural symbols will be reviewed for appropriateness. Religious subject matter or symbols may be placed in public space as long as it is not in a location where it can be revered and is solely for exhibiting cultural or historical traditions.

Artists must submit a statement or description of the proposed works (not to exceed 500 words), proof of acceptance into the 2020 Traditional Spanish Market, and up to two artwork submissions for consideration. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older and living and working in New Mexico. The normal restriction that artists with a current City of Albuquerque Public Art contract are not eligible for another for one calendar year is waived for this project. City employees and their families are eligible to submit works for purchase up to $1,000 if juried into the 2020 Market. Questions may be directed to Isabelle Zamora at (505) 768-3585 or [email protected].
