About This Call
This exhibition is open to students in grades 9-12 who reside in the Michigan counties of Allegan, Barry, Berrien, Branch, Calhoun, Cass, Kalamazoo, St. Joseph, or Van Buren. To enter the 6th Congressional Art Competition, students must reside in the 6th Congressional District (the bolded counties listed above). Each student artist may submit up to two unique works, with the option to select one 2-D piece for consideration in the Congressional Art Competition.
Artwork must be original in any medium; direct copies of existing works are not accepted. Works must not exceed 6 feet in any direction. Artworks considered for the Congressional Art Competition must be framed and not exceed a framed size of 26" x 26" x 4" deep. All 2-D work should be framed with sturdy wire for hanging, using Plexiglas rather than glass, and no snap frames are allowed. 3-D work must be sturdy and able to be handled and moved safely. The entry fee is $3 per artwork, due by April 11. Students who qualify for free or reduced lunch may waive all fees. The submission deadline is Sunday, March 8, 2020 by midnight; all entries must be submitted online.
Accepted artworks must be hand delivered to the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts (314 S. Park St., Kalamazoo, MI 49007) during April 2-4 or April 9-11, 2020 (12-7pm Thursday and Friday, 12-5pm Saturday). Work must remain on view through Tuesday, May 26, 2020. Notification of acceptance will be sent via email on March 26-27, 2020. Scholarship awards will be announced on April 23 at 6pm during the exhibit reception. In 2019, 56 scholarships and prizes were awarded, including six $100 cash juror awards and scholarships from multiple universities. The 6th District Congressional Art Competition winner will have one piece selected to hang for 1 year in the U.S. Capitol. All work is submitted at the owner's risk; the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts is not responsible for insurance during transit or while artwork is on its premises.
