About This Call
Shenandoah National Park's Artist-in-Residence program offers professional artists an opportunity to live and work in this exceptional environment for three weeks. The works completed during the program will serve, through the creativity of the selected artists, to deepen the understanding and appreciation of Shenandoah National Park. The program is supported by a generous donation from the Shenandoah National Park Trust.
This program provides artists with uninterrupted time to pursue their own body of work and the opportunity to engage and inspire the public through outreach. Artists have the opportunity to create works that promote an understanding of the need to preserve national parks. A small stipend for travel, subsistence, and support for material for public programs may be provided. The artist will be housed in a furnished cabin at the Skyland Resort in Shenandoah National Park; housing is for the artist only.
Professional artists including writers, composers, craftsmen, painters, photographers, storytellers, and videographers are encouraged to apply. The artist-in-residence will be required to present at least two public programs during their residency and donate an original piece of art representative of the artist's style and reflecting the residency within six months of the stay. Artists must provide their own personal art supplies and a vehicle is required for the residency. Available residency dates are May 6-24, July 8-26, August 5-23, September 2-20, and October 7-25, 2019. Entry fee is $10.00. Work samples may include up to 4 images, 4 audio files, and/or 4 video files. International artists are eligible.
