About This Call
The Office of Arts & Culture is seeking artists pre-qualified through the Public Art Boot Camp program to develop temporary artworks for the 2019 Seattle Center Sculpture Walk on the Seattle Center campus from August 31, 2019 through January 8, 2020. The theme for this year's series of artworks is "Metamorphosis." ARTS and Seattle Center are asking artists to create site-specific artworks that evoke the beauty and joy that comes from growing, evolving and morphing. Artists should create highly visible artworks that can transform Seattle Center's visitors' relationship to the space and their connection to it. The artworks may draw inspiration from the architecture, the landscape, Seattle Center history or the idea of "metamorphosis" abstractly.
Up to four selected artists will design and develop small-scale temporary artworks to be installed on city-owned street furniture, infrastructure or building facades (e.g., light poles, railings, sidewalks, trees, tree pits, stair risers, etc.) for a minimum of 12 weeks and up to four months. The artworks should not cause damage to property but should be secured to prevent theft or vandalism. Artworks must be designed for easy installation and de-installation, as they may be re-sited once or twice during the display period. Installation will occur August 19-23, 2019, with de-installation January 2-8, 2020.
Eligibility is limited to artists who have participated in the Public Art Boot Camp program and have not yet received a public art commission from the Office of Arts & Culture. Each selected artist will receive $6,000, inclusive of all fees and Washington State Sales and Use Tax (10.1%). Payment is structured as 40% upon acceptance of final proposal, 40% after installation documentation, and 20% after de-installation documentation and project summary submission. Application deadline is May 2, 2019 at 10:59 p.m. PDT. Applicants will be notified of selection by May 30, 2019. Submit eight images of past artworks, artist statement (not to exceed 2,000 characters), and concept proposal (not to exceed 2,000 characters) through CaFÉ online. Contact Elisheba Johnson at [email protected] or 206.684.0182 for questions.
