2019 Napa Lighted Art Festival - Call for Artists

The 2019 Napa Lighted Art Festival seeks approximately 15 light-based art installations for a free, open-air festival in downtown Napa. Selected artists will receive a stipend between $2,000-$5,000. Both individual artists and collaborative groups are encouraged to apply.

The festival celebrates innovative uses of light as an art medium. Light itself must be essential to the artwork concept; light used only to illuminate an artwork is not acceptable. Submissions may include light art, video art, 3D video mapping projections, light sculptures, LED, fiber optics, custom gobo designs, interactive works, lasers, and other light-based technologies. Artists are encouraged to submit work exploring the 2019 theme "Beyond," which encompasses concepts of transcendence, extremity, continuation, superiority, and imagination. Existing works are acceptable if they meet festival themes and criteria.

Work samples must include a minimum of 2 and maximum of 10 images, with up to 6 audio files and 6 video files permitted (20 total samples maximum). Submissions are open to international artists. All artworks must be structurally rigid and durable for outdoor winter conditions and must remain operational for all festival hours across nine nights (January 12-20, 2019, Monday-Thursday 6:00-9:00 p.m., Friday-Sunday 6:00-10:00 p.m.). Digital artwork must be submitted by November 1, 2018; lighted sculptures by January 3, 2019. An artist reception is scheduled for January 11, 2019. Installations will be positioned in pedestrian zones, sidewalks, parking lots, or park-like settings throughout downtown Napa, viewable from approximately 50-100 feet. Artists maintain copyright ownership; the festival reserves rights to reproduce images for publicity and marketing purposes and may re-exhibit selected works in future years.
