About This Call

HUB-BUB is an artist-in-residence program hosted by the Chapman Cultural Center in Spartanburg, SC designed to provide time and space for emerging artists to live free and create. Two residencies will be offered to studio artists for 11 months, from September 2019 to July 2020. During their residency, artists will receive a monthly stipend of $850 (paid on the 5th of each month), studio space, and housing with utilities paid. Artists will be housed in an unfurnished apartment in the City View apartments in downtown Spartanburg (approximately ¾ mile from the Chapman Cultural Center), with all utilities including internet provided. Studio space at the Chapman Cultural Center is approximately 300 square feet of shared space attached to the HUB-BUB offices. The studio is accessible from 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM on Saturday, and 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Sunday. Due to space limitations and the public nature of the program, specialty equipment and hazardous materials are prohibited.

Resident artists are expected to hold regularly scheduled open studio hours for 15 hours each week during which they will be available to discuss their work and process with the public. Additionally, artists should expect to commit 15 to 20 hours each week on community engagement and organizational activities, including attending regular staff meetings, participating in Chapman Cultural Center and community events (monthly art walk, festivals, board meetings), and occasionally contributing to offsite events, conducting workshops, or giving talks about their work to partnering institutions.

To be eligible, applicants must have received a relevant degree (BA, BFA, MA, MFA, or PhD with some emphasis on studio art) within the last 5 years or be scheduled to complete their degree in spring 2019. The program has no preferences in terms of medium or process. Entry fee is $45.00. Work sample requirements: minimum 5 images, maximum 20 total samples (images, audio, and/or video combined, with maximum 6 audio files and maximum 6 video files).
