About This Call
Request for proposals for a large, abstract or partially-abstract mural to cover between 50-75% of a vertical wall on the City of Dayton Transportation Center Garage in Downtown Dayton. The mural will be installed on the west face of the garage along Jefferson Street and Fifth Street, focusing on the inset cement block walls. Proposals may also include options for the design to extend horizontally across one or more of the outer walls of the parking levels.
Eligibility: Any amateur or professional artist or designer age 18 and older is eligible to apply. Artists under 18 may apply as part of a team with at least one member age 18 or older. Applicants must have primary residence within a 40-mile radius of downtown Dayton. Submissions can be made by individuals, groups, classes, or teams. The $10 application fee allows up to 3 submissions. Artists have the option of submitting design-only or design with a request to produce the mural. If production is to be completed by the selected artist, proof of past murals or public art is required. If production is not by the artist, the City of Dayton has contracted K12 Gallery & Tejas Mural Painting Team to produce the mural to the artist's specifications.
Proposals must include: application with complete contact information, two high-resolution design images (one of the proposed design and one rendered to scale on the intended surface), résumé or brief biography with references, examples of relevant work samples (minimum one image), and an artist statement about the design (one-page maximum). Designs should be abstract or semi-abstract, use flat paint application, employ palettes of 10 or fewer colors, and be applicable within a reasonable timeline. Traditional landscapes, portraits, textural or 3D designs, and highly detailed or generic designs will not be considered. Design Award: $750. Production Stipend: not to exceed $12,500 (must include all materials, labor, and processes; the City of Dayton will provide the lift). A designation plaque with artist name(s) will be provided. Timeline: Call opens August 9; application deadline September 16; committee review/selection week of September 30; winner announced week of October 7; winner to meet with mural team week of October 14; mural production mid-October (weather permitting).
