2019 Art in the West

Art in the West is an annual fine art exhibition and silent auction featuring works representing the High Desert region of the United States by contemporary artists. The High Desert region stretches east from the eastern slope of the Cascades and Sierras to the Wyoming Basin and Colorado Plateau, and from Southeastern British Columbia south to Northern Arizona. This fundraising event complements the Museum's signature fundraising event, the High Desert Rendezvous.

Submission to Art in the West is by invitation only. Artists may submit up to four works total for consideration, which can include two miniatures. All artworks must be original and completed within the last three years. Eligible media include oil, watercolor, acrylic, gouache, pastel, pen & ink, charcoal, etching, woodcut/block, stone lithograph, serigraph, photography, bronze/metal sculpture, ceramic sculpture, wood sculpture, stone sculpture, mixed-media works, fiber/textile arts, basketry, beadwork, glass, and non-traditional practices. Fine art prints are allowed, but not giclées or wet paintings. Miniatures may have no framed dimension exceeding 10 inches (maximum 100 square inches). Maximum weight for sculpture or framed artwork is 50 pounds. Two-dimensional works must be framed and completely prepared for hanging with all hardware attached. All works must be exhibit-ready.

Deadline for submissions is Saturday, May 18, 2019 at 5 p.m. Notification of acceptance is Friday, June 14, 2019. Art must be delivered to the Museum by Friday, July 5, 2019. The exhibition runs July 20-August 24, 2019, with an opening reception on Friday, July 19, 2019. Awards include a Jury's Choice Award of $500 and a Curator's Choice Award of $500. The event is a silent auction wall sale with a minimum bid determined by the artist not to exceed the declared value. A "buy-it-now" option is offered at a fixed price, typically 200% of the declared value. The High Desert Museum retains 50% commission on two-dimensional artworks sold and 30% on three-dimensional artwork. Artists are responsible for shipping costs and insurance during shipping. Unsold artwork must be picked up by Monday, September 13, 2019, or the artist forfeits the piece to the Museum.
