About This Call
The City of Auburn invites sculptors to submit applications for the Downtown Sculpture Gallery. Selected works will be on loan to the City for twelve months (September 2019 – September 2020) and can be available for sale during that time. Each selected artist will receive a $1,000 stipend. At the conclusion of the exhibition, the selection committee may purchase one or more sculptures for inclusion in the City of Auburn's permanent collection with a budget of $10,000. A "People's Choice" vote will be held online and via printed ballots, with the winning sculptor receiving a $500 prize.
Artists must be living or working in the Pacific Northwest (Washington, Oregon, Idaho, California, and Montana). Applicants may submit up to ten sculptures for consideration. Artwork may be in any media and must be durable, suitable for outdoors, and able to withstand the elements as well as interaction with pedestrians and the general public. Works may be functional or non-functional. Existing sculptures as well as artwork proposals are accepted. Proposals can be submitted as a sketch/illustration along with examples of other work demonstrating artistry, proficiency, and finish quality. Artists are required to deliver their artwork in person to Auburn, Washington.
Artwork will be located throughout Auburn's downtown with locations assigned by City staff. Artwork can be welded onto or bolted onto a steel plate attached to a concrete pedestal. Five pedestals are on the sidewalk and must not weigh more than 5,000 lbs, with width restrictions of 3' 8" from base to 7' height and 5' maximum width from 7' to 12' height. Two pedestals are in raised planter boxes approximately 3' x 3'. One pedestal is adjacent to the sidewalk with 5' maximum width. One is in a 20' x 5' raised planter box. One is a 4' x 4' flush concrete pad. The artist is responsible for transportation and installation of the artwork with some city assistance. The City will provide insurance during display, signage, website featuring, promotional materials, a walking tour, and a video. No commission is taken from private sales, but the City reserves the first right of refusal. Applications must be received by March 19, 2019 at 10:59 p.m. Pacific Time.
