About This Call
Urban Art Intersections is a public art initiative to enliven downtown Dayton streetscapes with art. Local artists and designers are invited to submit design ideas for four identified locations: Leigh Garage (Ludlow Street between Second and Third Streets), Don's Pawn Shop (107 E Third St, side facing Jefferson Street), Stage Door (44 N. Jefferson Street, north wall facing 2nd street), and Oriel Studios (131 E. Third Street, wall facing St. Clair). Applicants must complete a separate application for each location. Total design size cannot exceed a dimension that equals the same total surface area.
Eligibility: Any amateur or professional artists or designers ages 18 and older may apply. Artists under 18 may apply as part of a team with at least one member 18 or older. Applicants must have primary residence within a 40-mile radius of downtown Dayton. Submissions are free and open to the public within the targeted geography. Applicants may submit up to three separate designs. Submissions can be made by individuals, groups, classes, or teams. If selected, applicants must be available for consultation with a mural production team and sign an agreement with project organizers.
Proposals must include: site location, confirmation of qualifications to produce and paint the design, proposed site design as high-resolution .jpg files (up to four images from different vantage points, one rendered to scale, one applied to the intended building/surface), color palette (if applicant will execute their own work), resume or brief biography with references, examples of relevant work samples (one to six images), and an artist statement (one page maximum) describing design vision, creative approach, and relevant information.
Design Guidelines: Submissions should feature flat application of paint, palettes of 10 or fewer paint colors/shades, designs transferable by contract mural artist with designer guidance, and designs applicable within reasonable timeline. Designs will be evaluated on whether they are understandable by the public but stretch imagination, are site appropriate, contribute to downtown identity with forward-looking vision, consider public safety and accessibility, and demonstrate artist qualifications and strength of previous work. Images containing advertising, obscenity, profanity, or inappropriate content are not eligible.
Selected artists receive a $750 award, will be credited on all promotional materials, and will be included in community events to present completed designs. Project schedule: submissions due August 15 by 11:59 p.m. EST; jury of applications week of August 26; selected artists meeting week of September 5; artwork application begins week of October 1 and continues as weather permits, with remaining work completed in Spring 2019. Contact Patrick Mauk, Gallery Manager, at [email protected] or (937) 224-3822 for questions.
