About This Call
The School of Design at South Dakota State University invites applications for a 4-week artist-in-residence program from artists working in any discipline, including interdisciplinary approaches. The residency runs September 10-October 5, 2018, and provides a $2,500 honorarium.
The search committee seeks an artist able to develop artwork independently while sharing project conceptualization and visual progression with School of Design students, faculty, and the community during studio hours. Applications from artists currently residing and working outside the South Dakota region are especially encouraged.
The residency provides 24/7 access to a 1,200 sq. ft. lockable studio space that functions as a teaching gallery within an academic environment, plus private housing in a smoke-free, pet-free property within walking distance of campus. The resident artist must maintain a full-time working schedule with an open door policy during normal business hours and evening studio art courses. Requirements include giving a public lecture at the South Dakota Art Museum and participating in an open studio event and/or exhibition in the School of Design Ritz Gallery. The artist may also be asked to participate in 1-2 meet-and-greet events. Transportation, shipping, materials, supplies, meals, and personal expenses are the artist's responsibility.
Applications must include a statement of residency project intent (describing a 4-week plan to develop/produce artwork independently and how the applicant plans to interact with students), a resume not exceeding three pages, a list of three professional references, and 10 images of completed artwork and/or images relevant to the project intent statement. For audio and/or video work, provide web-link information within the resume. Entry fee: $15. Application deadline: April 3, 2018 at 11:59 p.m. MDT.
