About This Call

The Office of Arts & Culture is seeking artists pre-qualified through the Public Art Boot Camp program to develop temporary artworks for the 2018 Seattle Center Sculpture Walk on the Seattle Center campus from August 2018 through January 2019 (approximately five months). The theme is "Hidden Treasures." ARTS and Seattle Center are looking for artworks that ask visitors to see the campus in a new way, expose something beautiful and interesting, or create an artwork that changes the way we see the site. Artworks may draw inspiration from the architecture, landscape, Seattle Center history, or the idea of hidden treasures abstractly.

Up to eight selected artists will design and develop small-scale temporary artworks to be installed on city-owned street furniture, infrastructure, or building facades (such as light poles, railings, sidewalks, trees, tree pits, and stair risers) for a minimum of twelve weeks and up to five months from August 1, 2018 through January 8, 2019. Artworks must not cause damage to property and should be secured to prevent theft or vandalism. Selected artists may be encouraged to make use of existing infrastructure in unique and interesting ways. Artwork must be designed for easy installation and de-installation, as it may be re-sited once or twice during the five-month period. Artwork cannot cause permanent damage to city property and must not obscure city signage.

Eligibility is limited to artists who have participated in the Public Art Boot Camp program and have not yet received a public art commission from the Office of Arts & Culture. Each selected artist will receive $4,000, inclusive of all fees and Washington State Sales and Use Tax (10.1%). Payment is structured as 40% upon acceptance of the final artwork proposal, 40% after documentation of installation, and 20% after documentation of de-installation, photo documentation, and a brief project summary. Application deadline is March 27, 2018 at 10:59 p.m. PDT. Selected artists will be notified by April 9, 2018. Contact Elisheba Johnson at [email protected] or 206.684.0182.
