2018 Plein Air Plus - National Juried Competition

The Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences announces the third "Plein Air Plus" Competition and Exhibition on Long Beach Island, New Jersey. The juror is Valerie Craig, who will select approximately 35 artists to participate in the Paint Out and exhibition.

The Paint Out takes place over two months (July 1 - August 31, 2018), allowing artists to visit and paint Long Beach Island on their own schedule. Artists can choose the time of day, weather, and varied locations to paint. Finished paintings will be exhibited in the "Island Life" exhibition (September 7 - October 21, 2018). The exhibition will feature selected artists' Plein Air works and/or studio paintings developed from their Plein Air studies. An opening reception and awards presentation will be held on September 23, 2018, from 2-4 pm.

Eligibility: Open to all artists 18 years and older in the continental US. Entry fee is $35.00 for 3 entries (non-refundable). Artists must submit 3 images of previous work painted in the past two years. Painting media can include oil, acrylic, watercolor, and pastel. Image requirements: JPEG or JPG format, 1200 pixels or greater on the longest side, under 5 MB file size. An artist statement must be included with the application. Accepted artists will be notified by email and posted on the LBIF website by May 29, 2018.

The "Island Life" exhibition offers two submission options: Classical Plein Air (up to four paintings completed on site) or Plein Air Plus (two classical Plein Air paintings and one studio painting with studies, minimum 20" x 24"). All work must be made during July 1-August 31, 2018. Subject themes include beaches, salt marshes, Barnegat Bay, island towns, water sports, surfing, fishing, boating, and family entertainment venues. Work must be available for the entire exhibition duration and ready to hang with firm wiring. The LBIF retains 40% of the retail price of exhibited work.

Awards: Juror's Prize - First Prize $500 for both classical Plein Air and Plein Air Plus categories, 2nd Prize $250, 3rd Prize $100, and three Honorable Mentions. Additional prizes include Passport to LBI Award, People's Choice Award, and LBIF Art Committee Award. Quick Draw events will be held on July 13 and August 10 with new jurors for each event.
