About This Call
The David Brower Center invites Bay Area artists to submit work for the 2018 juried exhibition exploring the concept of hózhó—a Navajo term meaning beauty, balance, and harmony with oneself, other people, and the Earth. The exhibition will celebrate and investigate how beauty is crucial to preserving the natural world and how we perceive beauty in both untouched landscapes and everyday life.
Artwork must be existing works only, including wall-mounted objects, video, or temporary performances or events. Wall-mounted objects must be between 24" and 72" wide and no more than 12" deep, ready to hang. Video will be displayed on wall-mounted monitors and may be looped with other artists' videos; sound may be experienced only with headphones. Temporary art performances or happenings may be proposed as part of the exhibition's event programming, occurring within a limited time period such as one day or part of one day, with scheduling determined by the Center in consultation with the artist.
Submissions should include 1-3 images and/or up to 1 video. Participating artists will receive a $100 honoraria. The exhibition features jurors including Zenobia Barlow (Executive Director and Co-Founder of Center for Ecoliteracy), Ken Brower (Author), Isabella Kirkland (Artist), Randy Rosenberg (Executive Director and Chief Curator of Art Works for Change), and Apsara DiQuinzio (Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art and Phyllis C. Wattis Matrix Curator, UC Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive). Entry deadline is November 1, 2017 at 11:59 p.m. MDT.
