About This Call
The Artist-in-Residence Program at Glacier National Park offers professional artists the opportunity to pursue their artistic discipline while being surrounded by the park's inspiring landscape. The program seeks professional artists whose work is related to the park's interpretative themes and supports the mission of the National Park Service.
The program provides four weeks of uninterrupted time to pursue artistic work. Artists selected for June, July, and September will be housed rent-free in a furnished cabin on the shores of Lake McDonald. The artist selected for October will be housed rent-free in a furnished house in the park headquarters area in West Glacier. Basic cooking equipment and bedding are provided. Housing is available for the artist only; family members, significant others, and friends are not permitted to stay in the house. Artists must provide their own transportation and art supplies. Cell phone service is limited and internet is not provided in the housing, though WiFi is available at several locations both inside and outside the park.
During their residency, artists must present several public programs related to their experience as artist-in-residence, which can take the form of demonstrations, talks, exploratory walks, or performances. Upon returning home, artists are encouraged to present one public program to their local community. Within six months of completing the residency, artists must provide digital images of selected work representing their experience as artist-in-residence. The park has the right to use these images in park publications, websites, and presentations for education and outreach. Residency sessions are offered June 4–29, July 9–August 3, September 3–28, and October 1–26, 2018. Entry fee is $20.00. Up to three artists may apply under one application if their proposed project is a collaboration of several artistic disciplines; collaborating artists will be housed together.
