2018 Germantown Corridor Mural Project

This is an opportunity to submit a proposal for a mural design and construction at one of three pre-selected sites on the Germantown Street corridor on Dayton's West Side: 1501 Germantown, 2813 Germantown, or the US 35 Overpass on Germantown. If selected, artists will receive a stipend ranging from approximately $3,000 to $5,000, plus funding for materials and equipment, and will work with dedicated support teams to implement and construct the mural design.

Design proposals should explore the theme "Undiscovered Beauty: West Side Revisited," finding original interpretations based on the rich cultural and societal legacy of the West Side. Proposals may reflect upon the history of artists, musicians, athletes, and leaders from this region, and can be narrative or abstract. Designs should be colorful, inspiring, and engaging, based on research into the historical legacy and contributions of individuals and groups from the West Side at local, regional, national, and international levels. Each design must create a focal point of excitement and interest, emphasize the theme, be an original concept, and require minimal maintenance with no safety risks.

Lead artists must be 18 years or older and demonstrate strong painting ability, including blending, rendering, detail painting, and color mixing. Artists must be punctual, team players with positive attitudes, self-directed, flexible, and comfortable working at heights on scaffolding. Selected artists will review community feedback on designs during public engagement forums and may participate in community paint nights. Murals will be created between July 23 and September 30, 2018. Applications must include a current resume/CV, four examples of artwork (preferably painting or mural examples in JPEG format), and proposed design materials: a design image with proposed color palette, a to-scale street level elevation in JPEG format, and a brief description of how the design illuminates the project's central themes. Artists may submit separate applications for each site.
