About This Call
Form, Not Function is an annual juried exhibit of contemporary quilt art held at the Carnegie Center for Art & History in New Albany, Indiana. The exhibit is open to artists age 18 or older living in the United States. All works must be quilted (two or more distinct layers held together with stitches). The layers may include fiber and textile materials, but other techniques and mediums are acceptable as long as the work is quilted. Works must be original and completed since January 1, 2015, with no minimum or maximum size requirement. Three-dimensional works are eligible if ready to exhibit on the floor, on a pedestal, or include hardware for wall display. Collaborative works made by multiple artists are eligible.
The entry fee is $35.00 for up to three works (represented by up to 6 images). Entries must be submitted online through www.callforentry.org by March 15, 2018 at 11:59:59 PM Mountain Time Zone. For each work, submit two digital images: one full view showing all edges and one detail view showing stitching and characteristic details. Include title, media, dimensions, and price with each image. Submit a completed application, artist statement, and biography (each 3,000 characters maximum). Artists will be notified of acceptance on April 3, 2018. The exhibition runs May 25 – July 21, 2018, with an opening reception on May 25, 2018.
Accepted works should arrive April 29 – May 5, 2018. The Carnegie Center will insure all works from arrival until departure. Artists are responsible for shipping costs via FedEx or UPS and must enclose a pre-paid return-shipping label. Works will be available for pickup on July 30, 2018 and shipped on or about August 6-10, 2018. The exhibit is juried by a rotating panel of fiber artists and experts who consider originality, design, technique, and craftsmanship. Cash awards include: $1,000 Best of Show, $500 Award of Excellence (three awards), $300 Award of Excellence, $100 Award for Creative Use of Stitching, $100 Award for Political and Social Commentary, $100 Inspired by Nature Award, $50 Visitors' Choice Award, plus additional Awards of Merit. The Carnegie Center retains a 40% commission on any work sold during the exhibition or resulting from mediation by Carnegie Center staff.
