2018 DVAC Biennial Call for Exhibition Proposals

The Dayton Visual Arts Center (DVAC) is accepting proposals for exhibitions for the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons. The center will schedule four to six exhibitions during each season, including one large solo show each year by a member artist, and two exhibitions for its annual REACH (Realizing Ethnic Awareness and Cultural Heritage) collaboration with Sinclair Community College and EboNia Gallery, which celebrates African American, Appalachian, Latino, Native American, and other ethnic communities.

Entry fee is $30 per proposal; this fee is waived for the first application from any current DVAC member. Applicants must submit 6-10 images, and may include up to 3 audio files and 2 video files. Although DVAC is a member-based organization, non-members are encouraged to apply. There is no geographic limit for applicants. A three-person jury will review images, with recommendations going to the Exhibition and Program Committee for final approval by the Board of Trustees. Selected proposals will receive a modest stipend, an illustrated color brochure with a critical essay, digital documentation, and an opportunity for the exhibition to travel to additional venues throughout Ohio.

The gallery is 1,800 square feet with 200 feet of running wall space, including three moveable walls. The ceiling is 16 feet high with 50 feet of wall space at that height; remaining walls are 10 feet high. Natural light enters through storefront windows with west exposure. Exhibitions generally run four to seven weeks. DVAC manages basic installation, opening reception, and direct mail promotion. Additional expenses such as special installation, publications, or shipping are not covered unless approved in advance by the Board. DVAC insures work during exhibition but not during transit. Gallery commission on sales is 40 percent. Selected applicants will be notified December 15, with exhibition time slots offered January-March.
