About This Call

The City of Auburn invites sculptors to submit applications for Auburn's Downtown Sculpture Gallery, a public art exhibition showcasing ten sculptures throughout the historic downtown. The works selected will be on loan to the City for twelve months (September 2018 – September 2019) and can be available for sale during that time.

Eligibility is open to professional artists or artist teams living or working in the Pacific Northwest (Washington, Oregon, Idaho, California, and Montana). Applicants may submit up to ten sculptures for consideration. Artwork may be in any media and must be durable, suitable for outdoors, and able to withstand the elements as well as interaction with pedestrians and the general public. Works may be functional or non-functional. Existing sculptures as well as artwork proposals are accepted; proposals can be submitted as a sketch/illustration along with examples of other work demonstrating artistry, proficiency, and finish quality.

Each selected artist will receive a $1,000 artwork loan contract. The artist is responsible for transportation and installation of the artwork with some city assistance. The City will insure the artwork while on display (not during installation/deinstallation), provide signage, feature the work on the City website and in promotional materials, host a walking tour, and create a video featuring the artists. At the conclusion of the exhibition, the selection committee may select work(s) to be purchased for the City of Auburn's permanent collection with a $10,000 budget. A "People's Choice" vote will be held online and via printed ballots, with the winning sculptor receiving a $500 prize. No commission will be taken from private sales, but the City reserves the first right of refusal.

Artwork specifications vary by pedestal location. Five pedestals on the sidewalk require artwork not exceeding 5,000 lbs, with maximum width of 3'8" from base to 7' height and 5' maximum width from 7' to 12' height. Two pedestals are in raised planter boxes approximately 3' x 3', suited for smaller eye-level work. One pedestal is adjacent to the sidewalk with 5' maximum width. One is in a 20' x 5' x 18" raised planter box. One is a flush 4' x 4' concrete pad adjacent to the sidewalk. Artists are responsible for providing detailed installation instructions, any special installation materials or equipment, and repairs due to build quality during the exhibition. Application deadline: April 19, 2018 at 10:59 p.m. Pacific Time. Contact: Allison Hyde, Arts Coordinator, [email protected], 253-804-5043.
