About This Call
Form, Not Function is an annual juried exhibition of contemporary quilt art held at the Carnegie Center for Art & History in New Albany, Indiana. The exhibition is open to artists age 18 or older living in the United States. All works must be quilted (two or more distinct layers held together with stitches). The layers may include fiber and textile materials, but other techniques and mediums are acceptable as long as the work is quilted. Works must be original and completed since January 1, 2014, with no minimum or maximum size requirement. Three-dimensional works are eligible if ready to exhibit on the floor, on a pedestal, or with hardware for wall display. Works must be ready to hang on the wall, including the hanging rod. Collaborative works made by multiple artists are eligible.
Entry fee is $35.00 for up to three works (represented by up to 6 images). Entries are accepted online only through www.callforentry.org. For each work, submit two digital images: one full view showing all edges and one detail view showing stitching and characteristic details. Images must be of the actual completed artwork with black, white, gray, or earth tone backgrounds and no text. Include title, media, dimensions, and price with each image. Submit the completed application, correct entry fee, artist statement, and biography (each 3,000 characters maximum) by April 21, 2017 at 11:59:59 PM Mountain Time Zone. Artists will be notified of acceptance on May 31, 2017.
The exhibition runs July 21 – September 16, 2017, with an opening reception on July 21. Accepted works should arrive June 17 – July 1, 2017 between 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM. Works will be available for pickup on September 18, 2017 and shipped on or about September 25, 2017. The Carnegie Center will insure all works from arrival until departure. Artists are responsible for shipping costs and must include a pre-paid return-shipping label. No more than one work by an artist will be selected. Cash awards total $3,250, including a $1,000 Best of Show award. The jury includes Françoise Barnes, Ramona Lindsey, and Shawn Quinlan. The Carnegie Center retains a 40% commission on any work sold during the exhibition or through mediation by Center staff.
