About This Call

The Crooked Tree Arts Center Artist in Residency Program offers either a two or four week residency in a rural setting in Good Hart, Michigan, within walking distance of Lake Michigan and along the "Tunnel of Trees" scenic heritage route. The resident artist is housed in an apartment/studio space with a 6×11 foot studio, natural and track lighting, work tables, two easels, and shelving. The apartment includes a private bathroom, queen size bed, kitchenette, and laundry access. Dinners are provided five days a week. A bike is made available, and the artist is within walking distance of natural resources, Lake Michigan beaches, and the village of Good Hart. The area offers inspiring landscapes including Little Traverse Conservancy Nature Preserves, Headlands International Dark Sky Park, Elmer Johnston Nature Preserve, Goodhart Farms Nature Preserve, and Readmond Township Nature Preserve.

Applicants must be over 21, have completed an undergraduate degree in a visual art or design related field, and be in pursuit of a career as a professional artist or an MFA degree. The application requires a resume including art-related experience, artist statement, statement of intent for the residency, images of five examples of work (including medium and date of creation), preferred dates of residency, and a title and brief summary of a workshop or artist's talk to be offered at CTAC in Petoskey during the residency. The entry fee is $25. Residency dates available are four weeks between May 12–June 9, 2017, or two weeks between August 4–18, 2017, or September 22–October 6, 2017.

Accepted artists will participate in a post-residency exhibition at CTAC from October 14–November 18, 2017, in the Gilbert Gallery at the Crooked Tree Arts Center in Petoskey. Participating artists will be offered a $200 stipend to defray shipping costs. The apartment is not handicap accessible. No pets are allowed, overnight guests are not permitted, and the property is nonsmoking. Mobile phone reception and internet access are available but not always reliable. All painting and art supplies except basic supplies should be provided by the artist and mailed in advance. Residents must provide their own transportation to and from Northern Michigan.
