About This Call

The Office of Arts & Culture (ARTS) is seeking emerging artists pre-qualified through the Public Art Boot Camp program to develop temporary artworks for the 2017 Art Interruptions in the West Seattle neighborhood of Delridge. The artworks will be exhibited for approximately five months between August 3, 2017 and January 2, 2018. Artists who have previously received temporary or permanent commissions or exhibitions through ARTS are not eligible to apply.

Selected artists will design and develop small-scale temporary artworks to be installed on city-owned street furniture and infrastructure (signal boxes, utility poles, railings, sidewalks, street trees, tree pits, etc.) in the Delridge neighborhood and along the Delridge Connector Trail. The artworks should draw attention through surprise, contemplation, beauty, or humor, and must not cause damage to city property or obscure city signage. Artists should consider proposing artwork(s) within the Delridge Neighborhood Greenway (26th Ave SW between SW Andover St and SW Graham St, approximately 1.5 miles) and the Delridge Connector Trail (approximately ½ mile). Installation will occur between July 27 and August 2, 2017, with de-installation scheduled for January 2-8, 2018.

Each selected artist will receive $4,000, inclusive of all fees and Washington State Sales and Use Tax (9.6%). Payment is distributed as 40% upon acceptance of the final proposal, 40% after documented installation, and 20% after documented de-installation and project summary delivery. Applicants must submit eight images of past artworks, a letter of interest (not to exceed 2,000 characters), a concept proposal (not to exceed 2,000 characters), and a resume. The selection committee will review proposals and notify selected artists by April 26, 2017. Up to seven artists will be recommended for commissions. A mandatory artist orientation is tentatively scheduled for May 16, 2017.
