About This Call
The City of Greeley is creating an art corridor linking the University of Northern Colorado campus to downtown Greeley through the Uptown Tree Program. This public art initiative includes a trail of artwork for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists along the Downtown/UNC Art Walk corridor in collaboration with Community Development's 8th Avenue improvements and the Downtown Development Authority. Seven additional art trees will be installed in September 2016, continuing a series that began in 2014 with ten trees and expanded in 2015 with five more.
Artists are invited to create original or limited edition sculptural art trees with maximum creativity in design and material selection. Designs may range from literal to surreal, kinetic, musical, or playful, and may include abstract sculptures. Each tree will be completely unique. A budget of up to $10,000 per approved sculpture is available to cover design fees, execution, transportation, and installation. Artists must design artwork around a steel or aluminum pole (6 inch outside diameter, maximum 20 feet high) provided by the artist. The artwork must be self-contained with no electrical power available. All sculptures must be substantially fabricated and sufficiently safe to withstand Colorado's extreme weather, including high and low temperature changes, wind, rain, and snow. Wind load is a major concern; artists are encouraged to consult a structural engineer. Sculptures that could be interpreted as advertising or signage for nearby businesses will not be accepted.
Proposals are due by May 11, 2016 at midnight. Top eight artists will be notified by May 18 and will begin a detailed design phase including 3-D models due June 8. Finalists are notified June 22 and the contractual process begins. Artists fabricate off-site during July and August with monthly progress updates required. Two installation dates will be scheduled in September 2016. Artists are responsible for installation with assistance from City staff. The City will provide a 24-inch round 7-foot deep concrete base foundation and a 40x40x30-inch concrete planter box. Submissions must include 3-6 images of work samples.
