About This Call

The Office of Arts & Culture is seeking artists pre-qualified through their Artist Rosters (Emerging Artist, Ethnic Artist, and Public Art Boot Camp) to develop temporary artworks for the 2016 Seattle Center Sculpture Walk on the Seattle Center campus from August 26, 2016 through January 8, 2017. The theme for this year's series of artworks is Spectacles—strange or interesting objects and artistic expressions that transform a site or a visitor's experience. Artists are encouraged to create highly visible artworks that can transform the Seattle Center's visitors' relationship to the space, drawing inspiration from the various festivals staged on the grounds or from the concept of Spectacles in general.

Up to seven selected artists will design and develop small-scale temporary artworks to be installed on city-owned street furniture, infrastructure, or building facades (such as light poles, railings, sidewalks, trees, tree pits, and stair risers). Artworks should not cause damage to property and must be secured to prevent theft or vandalism. The selected artists may consider different materials and approaches, and will be encouraged to make use of existing infrastructure in unique and interesting ways. Artwork must be designed for easy installation and de-installation, as it may need to be re-sited once or twice during the four-month period. Artworks cannot cause permanent damage to city property and must not obscure city signage.

Each selected artist will receive $4,000, inclusive of all fees and Washington State Sales and Use Tax (9.6%). Payment is structured as 40 percent upon acceptance of the final artwork proposal, 40 percent after documented installation, and 20 percent after documented de-installation, photo documentation, and a brief project summary. Applicants must submit eight images of past artworks, a letter of interest (not to exceed 2,000 characters), a concept proposal (not to exceed 2,000 characters), resume, and references. Selected artists will be notified by May 25, 2016, with a mandatory artist orientation on June 1, 2016. Installation is scheduled for August 22-26, 2016, with de-installation in January 2-8, 2017.
