About This Call

Crooked Tree Arts Center announces the 3rd year of its Artist Residency Program, designed to support emerging artists by providing working and living space, portfolio development opportunities, and exhibition at the Arts Center. The two-week residency is open to artists skilled in painting, drawing, illustrating, pastels, and 2-dimensional multimedia.

The residence is located in rural Northern Michigan within walking distance of Lake Michigan and the village of Good Hart, offering access to natural inspiration through forests, farms, aquatic habitats, and nearby nature preserves and state parks. Benefits include free housing and workspace, provided food, time to work independently in a scenic environment, exhibition opportunity, portfolio addition, and connection to the local artist community. Requirements include being over 21, having completed an undergraduate degree, pursuing an MFA or art career, and participating in an educational session with the Arts Center and the residency exhibition.

The apartment/studio space includes a private bathroom, queen bed and futon sofa bed, kitchenette with stocked breakfast and lunch items, weekday dinners, laundry access, internet and mobile phone access (limited reliability), a 6x11 foot studio with natural and track lighting, work table, two easels, and shelving. Basic supplies including mineral spirits and rags are provided; artists must bring their own art supplies. The residence is not handicap accessible. Artists must be non-smokers with no pets. Residency dates are May 13-27, 2016 or August 5-19, 2016, with alternate times available by mutual agreement. Application deadline is January 31, 2016. Applicants must submit a resume, artist statement, statement of intent, five images of work with medium and date, and a $25 application fee. Notification of acceptance occurs during the week of February 15, 2016, with artist commitment required by February 29, 2016.
