About This Call
The Artist-in-Residence program for midcareer artists is a six-week fellowship program intended to achieve artistic diversity by opening the campus as a laboratory for innovation to dynamic artists, designers, and makers throughout the world. The program provides opportunities for artists to explore expanded ideas and themes in an inspiring environment and introduces OCAC and the greater Portland communities, including students, faculty, and visitors, to contemporary art and craft. The six-week residency takes place between January 19 – June 30, 2016.
Residents are expected to pursue a body of work while at OCAC and to be involved with students participating in Community Programs. Residents must be visual artists of exceptional talent with strong communications skills, demonstrating a focused studio practice and the ability to discuss significant achievements in their field. Possible involvement during the residency includes teaching a workshop for students, interacting with degree students in BFA and MFA programs, presenting a public lecture, and participating in open studios.
The residency includes a $2,500 fellowship, use of state-of-the-art studios, on-campus housing if needed (limited to residents only), and free Studio School continuing education class or workshop tuition on a space available basis. Residents are responsible for all materials used during the residency and must commit as a full-time resident for the specified period. They are expected to produce a significant body of work and contribute to the community through 20 hours of activities such as lectures, open studio hours, teaching workshops, and critiques. Application materials include 10 images of work, artist statement, proposal, resume, and a list of 3 professional references. Applicants will be judged on portfolio quality, originality and scope of the residency proposal, potential for working within a community of makers, and relevance of the proposal to OCAC's resources. The program is funded by a generous grant from the Collins Foundation.
