About This Call

Form, Not Function is an annual juried exhibit of contemporary quilt art held at the Carnegie Center for Art & History in New Albany, Indiana. The exhibit is open to artists age 18 or older living in the United States. All works must be quilted (two or more distinct layers held together with stitches). The layers may include fiber and textile materials, but other techniques and mediums are acceptable as long as the work is quilted. Collaborative works made by multiple artists are eligible. Works must be original and completed since January 1, 2013, and ready to hang on the wall including the hanging rod. There is no minimum or maximum size. Three-dimensional works (including those mounted on stretchers) are eligible but must be ready to exhibit on the floor, on a pedestal, or include hardware for wall display.

The entry fee is $35.00 for up to three works. Entries are accepted online only through www.callforentry.org. For each work entered, submit two digital images of the completed work: one full view showing all edges and one detail view showing the stitching and details characteristic of the work. Images must be of the actual, completed artwork with black, white, gray, or earth tone backgrounds and no text. Include title, media, dimensions, and price with each image. Submit the completed application, correct entry fee, artist statement, and biography (each 3,000 characters maximum) by February 1, 2016 at 11:59:59 PM Mountain Time Zone. Artists will be notified of acceptance on March 7, 2016. The exhibition runs May 13 - July 9, 2016, with an opening reception on May 13, 2016.

Cash awards include: $1,000 Best of Show sponsored by Carnegie Center Inc.; $500 Award in memory of textile artist Alma Lesch sponsored by the DELvelopment Foundation; $500 Award of Excellence presented by the Louisville Area Fiber and Textile Artists; $300 Award of Excellence presented by River City Fiber Artists; $100 Award for Creative Use of Stitching presented by the Southern Indiana Quilt Guild; $100 Award for Political and Social Commentary; $100 Inspired by Nature Award; $50 Visitors' Choice Award; plus additional cash Awards of Merit. The exhibit is juried by a rotating panel of fiber artists and experts who consider originality, design, technique, and craftsmanship. Artists are responsible for all shipping costs via FedEx or UPS with a pre-paid return-shipping label enclosed. The Carnegie Center will insure all works from arrival until departure. Artists are encouraged to offer works for sale; the Carnegie Center retains a 40% commission on any work sold during the exhibition or resulting from Carnegie Center mediation.
