About This Call

The Hawaiʻi State Foundation on Culture and the Arts seeks to commission a sculpture of the highest aesthetic standards for the new Kona Judiciary Complex in Kailua-Kona on the island of Hawaiʻi. Sculptors using a variety of durable materials are encouraged to apply. The project budget is $150,000, paid directly to the artist over five phases spanning an estimated two-year period.

The Kona Judiciary Complex will centralize West Hawaiʻi Judiciary operations into a single location, housing three circuit courtrooms, two district courtrooms, and two family courtrooms, along with judge's chambers, holding areas, and spaces for Third Circuit departments and programs. The architectural design intends to create a functional and sustainable civic building inspired by the cultural sense of place representative of the region while maintaining the gravitas of a courthouse.

Eligibility is regional with preference for Hawaiʻi artists. An eligible artist must have been born and/or educated in Hawaiʻi, obtained major artistic training and development in Hawaiʻi, be a Hawaiʻi resident, or have made a significant impact in Hawaiʻi through exhibitions, installations, and/or commissions. Selection criteria include artistic merit, appropriateness of medium and style to the project goals, experience with similar-scale projects and public agencies, and demonstrated ability to respond to the site and community characteristics. The artist selection process includes application screening, presentation to the Art Advisory Committee, finalist interviews, a limited design competition, and final recommendation to the HSFCA Board of Commissioners. Application deadline: July 3, 2016. Seven images required.
