About This Call

The Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts, Inc. (BOPA) announces the tenth edition of the Janet & Walter Sondheim Prize, which awards a $25,000 fellowship to a visual artist or visual artist collaborators living and working in the Baltimore region. Approximately six finalists will be selected for final review, with their work exhibited in the Thalheimer Galleries of the Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA). An exhibition of semi-finalists' work will be featured during Artscape weekend (July 17-19, 2015). If artist collaborators are chosen as winners, the $25,000 prize will be equally divided among group members.

The selection process occurs in three phases. In the first review, jurors independently review submissions (up to five digital images or ten minutes of time-based work plus a resume) to select approximately 40 semi-finalists. Semi-finalists advance to the second review, submitting up to 30 images or time-based works and a description of how they will use the fellowship. Jurors then select approximately six to eight finalists for exhibition and final review. In the final review, finalists' work is exhibited at the Baltimore Museum of Art, and jurors meet with each artist for up to 30 minutes in their exhibition space on Saturday, July 11, 2015. The fellowship winner is announced that evening at the award reception.

Applications are accepted through www.callforentry.org. Entry fee is $30. Artists may submit up to five images or up to ten minutes of time-based work (or a combination, with each image subtracting two minutes from the time-based total). Video submissions should be in .mov or Quicktime format, no larger than 250MB, and may be submitted via DVD or online file host such as Dropbox. DVDs should be sent to: Sondheim Prize, Attention: Kim Domanski, Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts, 10 East Baltimore Street, 10th Floor, Baltimore, MD 21202. Videos via online file host should be sent to [email protected]. Application deadline: Monday, January 12, 2015. Semi-finalists announced late February 2015; finalists announced mid-April 2015. Finalist exhibition runs June 24 – August 9, 2015.
