About This Call

Form, Not Function is an annual juried exhibition of contemporary quilt art held at the Carnegie Center for Art & History in New Albany, Indiana. The exhibition is open to artists age 18 or older living in the United States. All works must be quilted (two or more distinct layers held together with stitches). The layers may include fiber and textile materials, but other techniques and mediums are acceptable as long as the work is quilted. Collaborative works made by multiple artists are eligible. No more than one work by an artist will be selected. Works must be original and completed since January 1, 2012, with no minimum or maximum size. Works must be ready to hang on the wall, including the hanging rod. Three-dimensional works are eligible but must be ready to exhibit on the floor, on a pedestal, or include hardware for wall display.

The entry fee is $35.00 for up to three works, payable to Carnegie Center, Inc. Entries must be submitted online by February 1, 2015 at 11:59:59 Mountain Time Zone. For each work entered, submit two digital images: one full view showing all edges and one detail view showing the stitching and details. Include title, media, dimensions, and price with each image. Artists must also submit completed application questions, correct entry fee, an artist statement (3,000 characters maximum), and biography (3,000 characters maximum). Backgrounds should be black, white, gray, or earth tones with no text.

Artists will be notified of acceptance on March 9, 2015. Accepted works should arrive at the Carnegie Center from March 23-April 3, 2015. The exhibition runs from May 8-July 11, 2015, with an opening reception on May 8. Works will be available for pickup on July 13, 2015, and will be shipped on or about July 20, 2015. The Carnegie Center will insure all works from arrival until departure. Artists are responsible for all shipping costs and must enclose a pre-paid return-shipping label with their work. The Carnegie Center retains a 40% commission on any work sold during the exhibition or resulting from mediation by Carnegie Center staff or volunteers.

Cash awards include: $1,000 Best of Show (Carnegie Center Inc.), $500 Award in memory of textile artist Alma Lesch (DELvelopment Foundation), $500 Award of Excellence (Louisville Area Fiber & Textile Artists), $300 Award of Excellence (River City Fiber Artists), $100 Award for Political & Social Commentary (Kathleen Loomis), $50 Visitors' Choice Award, plus additional Awards of Merit. The exhibit is juried by a rotating panel of fiber artists and experts who consider originality, design, technique, and craftsmanship. Contact Karen Gillenwater, Curator, at 812-944-7336 or [email protected] for questions.
