About This Call
Crooked Tree Arts Center announces the 2nd year of its Artist Residency Program, designed to support emerging artists by providing working and living space, an opportunity to build their portfolio, and a chance to exhibit their work. The program is open to creative artists skilled in painting, drawing, illustrating, pastels, and 2-dimensional multimedia. Selected artists will spend two weeks in Northern Michigan, away from their usual environment, to concentrate on their artistic work, meet members of the local arts community, and engage in an educational experience.
The residence is located in a rural setting within walking distance of Lake Michigan and the village of Good Hart along Highway 119 (Tunnel of Trees). The area offers access to Little Traverse Conservancy's Nature Preserves, state parks, and the Headlands Dark Skies Park. The artist will be housed in an apartment above a garage with a private bathroom, queen bed, futon sofa bed, kitchenette, and laundry access. A 6x11 foot studio space includes natural and track lighting, work table, two easels, shelving, and basic supplies. Internet and mobile phone reception are available but not always reliable. Dinners (5 per week on weekdays) are provided. A bike will be made available for transportation.
Benefits include free housing and workspace, provided food, two weeks to work independently, opportunity to exhibit at Crooked Tree Arts, portfolio addition, and connection to the local artist community. Requirements include being over 21, having completed an undergraduate degree, pursuing an MFA or art career, and submitting a competitive application with resume, artist statement, statement of intent, and five images of work. An application fee of $25 is required. Selected artists must participate in an educational session (lecture, workshop, plein air expedition, or artist discussion group) and exhibit their work at CTAC. Residency dates available: May 8-22, 2015; May 29-June 12, 2015; or July 31-August 14, 2015. Alternate times may be available by mutual agreement. Artists must be non-smokers with no pets. The apartment is not handicap accessible.
