About This Call

The Hawai'i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (HSFCA) seeks to commission artwork for the Hawai'i public school system through the Art in Public Places/Department of Education-Artists in Residence Program (APP/DOE-AIR). Up to three DOE school projects will be initiated in the 2014-2015 school year, with each project budgeted at a maximum of $100,000. The program aims to commission works of the highest aesthetic standards that contribute to the happiness and well-being of students, staff, and community. Artists are encouraged to use a variety of artistic approaches and media. Culminating works of art might include sculpture fashioned from metal, stone, glass, or concrete, or wall murals created with ceramic and/or mosaic tiles, metal, glass, or concrete.

Eligibility is limited to Hawai'i artists: those born and/or educated in Hawai'i regardless of current residence; artists who obtained major artistic training and development in Hawai'i; Hawai'i residents; or artists who have made significant impact in Hawai'i through exhibitions, installations, and/or commissions. The program commissions individual artists only; artist collaboratives will not be considered. Applicants must submit 10 digital images of past work.

Selected artists will work collaboratively with teachers, students, and the school community to develop artwork reflecting the school's environment, curriculum, cultural values, and aesthetics. Artists are required to provide a residency in the school equivalent to 14-16 days of instruction during the project term, conduct a minimum of one in-service training workshop for teachers, one presentation to the school and community, and one studio visit for select students and teachers. The budget is paid directly to the artist in six phases over an estimated three-year period. Project implementation is scheduled for October 2015-December 2018. Application deadline: March 30, 2015. Contact: Trisha Lagaso Goldberg at [email protected].
