About This Call

The Orange County Register, with the help of area arts organizations, invites nominations for the 2014 Orange County High School Artists of the Year. This program recognizes top visual and performing arts students in Orange County, California.

Orange County high schools may nominate juniors and seniors in the following disciplines: Theater, Dance, Instrumental Music, Vocal Music, Visual Arts, and Film/Video. Each school can nominate one student in each discipline for a total of six nominees per school. School-nominated students will be evaluated via an online application, work samples, and in-person interviews. An Artist of the Year will be chosen by a panel of arts teachers and professionals in each discipline.

Round 1 (School Nominations) Application Deadline: 10 p.m., Friday, February 14, 2014. Visual and performing arts teachers at Orange County high schools are encouraged to submit nominations with input from the nominated student. The nomination application includes: an art sample demonstrating the art form submitted online; written statements from the nominating teacher (three prompts, 2000 character limit each); written statements from the nominated student (two prompts, 2000 character limit each); an arts résumé in PDF format; and a signed nomination agreement from the teacher, principal, student, and parent/guardian. Nominees will be announced February 24, 2014. The Top 10 will be announced March 31, 2014.

Round 2 (The Top 10): Top 10 nominees in each discipline will be invited to perform or present their artwork and have a conversation with judges. In-person interviews are expected to last approximately 15 minutes per student. Theater interviews are scheduled for Wednesday, April 9, 2014, 4 pm – 7 pm. Students unable to be in Orange County may arrange interviews via streaming video. For questions about video submission resources, contact [email protected] no later than Friday, January 31, 2014.
