About This Call
The David Brower Center's Hazel Wolf Gallery invites San Francisco Bay Area artists to submit work for the 2014 juried annual exhibition "Reimagining Progress: Consumption, Consumerism, and Alternative Economies." The exhibition runs May 15 - September 5, 2014, with an artists reception on Thursday, May 22, 2014.
Eligibility is limited to artists age 18 and older living in the San Francisco Bay Area counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, or Sonoma. Submissions should include 1-3 images and/or up to 1 video file. Artwork will be wall-mounted objects, video, or temporary performances/happenings. Wall-mounted objects must be no less than 24" wide, no more than 72" wide, and no more than 12" deep. Video will be displayed on wall-mounted monitors and may be looped with other artists' videos; sound may be experienced only with headphones. Temporary art performances or happenings may be proposed as part of the exhibition's event programming and will occur within a limited time period. For proposed performances, submission should include images or video representing the event plus a description including title, type of event, concept, performer names, space requirements, and duration. Artists are expected to provide all materials for events but may use the Center's tables, chairs, and/or theater if available.
Artist notification will occur in mid-February 2014. The David Brower Center is a nonprofit in Berkeley dedicated to environmental and social action. The Hazel Wolf Gallery has featured exhibitions exploring the intersection between art and activism, including work by Sebastião Salgado, Richard Misrach, David Maisel, and Chris Jordan. Jurors include Lawrence Rinder (Director of Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive), JD Beltran (Artist and President of San Francisco Arts Commission), Deborah Munk (Director of Artist Residency Program at Recology San Francisco), and Berit Ashla (Executive Director of David Brower Center).
